On the Pont-du-Gard side
Proyecto : From Greek emporia to Gallic oppida
Languedoc is a territory in the South of France, traditionally divided into Upper-Languedoc and Lower-Languedoc. It comes from the language spoken in the Middle Ages in the South of France, the "langue d'Oc". According to several hypotheses, we think that Hannibal Barca's army passed through the Pont-du-Gard. After the defeat of Carthage during the Second Punic War, Rome strengthened its domination in Gaul. It was in this context of Romanization that the Pont du Gard aqueduct was built in the 1st century AD to supply Nîmes with water.
