The Roquemaure Passage: the Feat
Proyecto : The Gauls in the Rhone valley: friends or ennemies ?
The Roquemaure Passage is a significant event in the history of the Punic Wars, particularly the Second Punic War, which opposed Rome to Carthage (218-201 BC). It is directly linked to the military exploit of Hannibal Barca, the famous Carthaginian general, and took place during his campaign in Italy. Hannibal used rafts, his army and elephants to cross the river. The Carthaginian general managed to cross the Rhone thanks to this clever idea. Roquemaure is located between the plain and the mountains. The name of the mountain is Saint-Génies. Today Roquemaure is on the border of Gard and Vaucluse and also in the Province of Narbonnaise.
