Trasimeno lake
Proyecto : First major Italian defeat at Lake Trasimeno
Lake Trasimeno, located in central Italy, is the fourth-largest lake in the country and holds a significant place in both natural history and the historical events that occurred around it. The lake is situated in the region of Umbria, just south of the city of Perugia and near the borders with Tuscany. The lake’s historical importance is most famously tied to the Battle of Lake Trasimeno, one of the most significant confrontations of the Second Punic War between Rome and Carthage. The battle occurred on June 21, 217 BCE, when the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca defeated the Roman forces under Gaius Flaminius. This battle is notable for being one of the worst defeats in Roman history and one of the most successful tactical maneuvers in ancient warfare, masterminded by Hannibal Barca, the Carthaginian general.
