Bagà

Proyecto vinculado: Ebro battle, it's a new beginning

Bagà is a municipality in the province of Barcelona, within the autonomous community of Catalonia, Spain. It is part of the Berguedà comarca and has a population of 2,182 inhabitants (INE 2024). The nearby district of Terradelles, located approximately 2 km south, is also part of the municipality. Situated in the Bastareny River valley, a right-hand tributary of the Llobregat River, Bagà lies 20 km from Berga and 28 km from Puigcerdà, accessible via the Cadí Tunnel (with its southern entrance just 6 km away). The town is located in the northern part of Alt Berguedà at an altitude of 786 meters above sea level.

The proximity of Berga and Puigcerdà suggests that during the Second Punic War, Hannibal's troops may have passed through this territory. Trade exchanges with the northern Iberian tribes, along with payments in exchange for a non-aggression pact, aided Hannibal in his historic feat of crossing the Pyrenees with his entire army.

The present layout of Bagà dates back to the 13th century, when the Barons of Pinós established the town with a structured urban plan. Remnants of this historical development include the old town center, a large central square, a church showcasing transitional Romanesque-Gothic architecture, and the Palace of the Pinós family—currently undergoing restoration after serving various residential and agricultural purposes over time.
