Proyecto vinculado: Ebro battle, it's a new beginning
Bolvir is a municipality located in the province of Girona, within the autonomous community of Catalonia, Spain. It lies in the eastern part of the Baixa Cerdanya comarca, near the French border, at an altitude of 1,148 meters above sea level. With a population of 497 inhabitants (INE 2024), the town is situated on the sunny slopes of the Pyrenean foothills, in an area locally known as La Solana. The lower part of the municipality, known as Talltorta, lies on gentler terrain near the Segre River. The area is characterized by secondary residences built in traditional stone and wood.
The first human settlement in Bolvir dates back to the Bronze Age, around 3,500 years ago.
In the 2nd century BC, the Iberian settlement of Castellot became a prominent site. The Romans later occupied the area due to its strategic location. The Iberians initially accepted Roman presence, benefiting from new trade laws and enhanced military defenses. However, over time, heavy taxation and demands for natural resources led to resistance. The Iberians eventually capitulated, embraced Romanization, and relocated to Julia Lybica—modern-day Llivia.
