Ebro battle, it’s a new beginning

A battle in which luck and strategy were decisive for both empires, Carthaginian and Roman.

The Battle of the Ebro, fought in the spring of 217 BC during the Second Punic War, marked a decisive naval defeat for Carthage against Rome.

The clash, near the mouth of the Ebro River—bordering the spheres of influence of Rome and Carthage in the Iberian Peninsula—pitched the Carthaginian fleet under Himilco against the Roman forces led by Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio Calvus. Rome sank or captured 29 enemy ships, thus seizing naval control of Hispania from Carthage.

This victory strengthened Rome's position in the region, weakened Carthage’s strategy, and incited rebellion among Iberian tribes allied with Carthage.

It was a turning point that contributed to the eventual Roman victory in the war.
